Advantages – The method of placing fertilizers within the soil next to the plant roots is called
Banding. The Benefits of Banding fertilizers as against Top-Dress (Placement on top of the soi)
are: 

• Less Fertilizer loss to Volatilization and Leaching – Between 60% to 80% of the
  fertilizer applied top-dressed may be loss to Volatilization (Go up in gas), and
  Leaching.
• The plants get in direct contact with the fertilizer for immediate uptake.
• Guyana’s Coastal Soils are high in Iron and Aluminum. Top-Dressed method of
  fertilizer application has proven to change Phosphorus as in TSP into Iron and
  Aluminum Phosphates which are not taken up by plants.
